Why do you live/work in Capitol Hill?

I read these posts and am quite amazed how full of vitriol they are against Capitol Hill residents - It things are so bad up here, why do you live and work is such a hostile environment that you'd need to seek refuge in a fascist cafe?

It seems that this has turned into a Cafe Europa Blog of sorts...as for you, Jerry, maybe their cameras are for creeps like you...and "Whacko?" well, it is Capitol Hill...get used to it. Cafe Europa has great coffee...JERRY SUCKS!

I'm writing and watching from this from this cafe europa. Been coming here for 2 weeks now and just kinda curious. They are nice enough I guess but something is very very unusal about this place. Right Cafe, Wrong Place! I cannot think of a worst suited community than Capitol Hill for Cafe Europa! The people in the surrounding neighborhood are rude and weird. Its a mix of the kind of people who inherit homes and the kind of people with some money and no class, Seattle at it's best. Don't forget the freaks at the park, how could a normal married couple with any sense choose to raise their children in that kind of freak show community, or even bring them to that park. Cafe Europa is a really great cafe and is the only light in a dim-witted 20 block radius. The only downfall is that you have to travel through Capitol Hill to get to it. The beauty in all this is that Cafe Europa is my secret spot. sm

the visitor

I couldn't agree more on the homeless problem is Seattle. My first expierence with Cafe Europa was on a visit to my sister who has lived on Capitol Hill for 20 years. After many owners and attempts in the location, Cafe Europa is by far the best yet, and they have managed to clean up the damage all the previous owners have done over the years. Little did I know, the same cafe owner owns gated property in my Issaquah neighborhood. Now fully seeing the connection I understand why he feels the way he does. My wife and I loved the coffee and food, it's a shame that my sister who lives a block away has never been inside the place, but her children can be a little loud. I did notice that it does have it's share of WiFi users that try to get something for nothing, the cafe isn't big enough to house 4 hour "web-surfing time wasters." They discourage the inner city attitude and just try to run a respectable place. The neighborhood owes Cafe Europa a great deal!

In rebuttal to the previous comment on our Cafe, we would like to say a few things. As business owners who have had far too many encounters with homeless people, we do have certain opinions about the homeless which we are more than entitled to and will not apologize for, ever! We now maintain certain policies at Cafe Europa regarding homeless people or other such Riff-Raff with or without homes, in order to protect ourselves,our interests, our company, and our customers. Anyone who owns a business in Seattle with any sort of storefront will agree with these policies, I'm sure. As for us being homophobic...HELLO!...Cafe Europa is on Capital Hill; enough said. We obviously have many gay and lesbian cusotmers who I'm sure would be quick to assure you that we are a "gay friendly" cafe. In fact we're starting to think the gay population on the hill is a lot more normal that the straight population, but thats beside the point. We also have sponsored gay & lesbian activities such as the Front Runners organization just last month. Aside from all of that, we simply expect courtesy and respect from our customers when they walk through the door. We have a couple of signs on our front doors going over our rules which may seem a little over explanatory at first. However, they actually started out only a couple of lines long. How were we to know that people would try to bring 60 lb dogs into our Cafe to eat lunch at their owners' feet? Or that every person walking up E.Galer would stop and ask for a free cup of water in the middle of our lunch rush when we're trying to serve our REAL customers? Or that we were expected to provide a restroom for everyone walking within 1/2 mile radius and clean up after them when they leave our bathroom a disgusting mess and then steal our tampons? Or that people would come into our RESTAURANT with sack lunches and procede to sit at our tables and eat lunch as if we were a rest stop or a park bench? This is not a community centre. We cater to decency, not filth! We work 7 days a week to make Cafe Europa a clean, respectable, quiet, and aesthetically pleasing place to be for our customers who we know appreciate our efforts. Our place is very different from any other place in Seattle in many positive ways which is obvious as soon as you walk in the door. Cafe Europa is a refuge for the decent patrons of Seattle who wish for a quiet, clean place to be where they'll get friendly, personable, respectful service and be free of smoke, gross music, & ugly ads for terrible bands. So THAT is what we're about. Come join us for victuals to delight the Palette, charming company to intrigue the mind, and lively social & political debates to inspire progressive thought...or you could just come and get a Panini. Nothing wrong with the food BUT

There is nothing wong with the place; I am very sorry to not feel good anymore about giving this establishment my money, but his homophobia and his rabid attitudes toward the homeless are too much for me. There are plenty of other places to be, this is no longer one of them for me.

Consultant

Being from Europe, it is very pleasing to find a good authentic European Cafe. Cafe Europa is probably one of the best located in Seattle.The theme is mostly French and Italian.But I must say that the "Attitude" is very much "FRENCH!" They don't charge for the Internet Access and for the most it's a quiet little spot. It's very easy to spend the entire day there without realizing it. The Wine selection is excellent for such a little out of the way place. As for Erich Michael, I know him well, and some days I wish I didn't! But I must admit that his opinions and attitudes have forged a dank seedy silly little store into a hidden Seattle phenomenon.
