Not so free and not so good
So, I went here hoping it would be as good as everyone said. The people who work there are fine. I've read many reviews saying the owner is psychotic, but as to that I cannot attest. However, a 12oz Mocha cost $3.80. I work at Starbucks (yes, I know, die corporate America, but I'm a college student, so get over it), and not only was it significantly more than Starbucks, it tasted awful. The espresso was burnt and sour; by far the worst espresso I've ever had. On the plus side, the ambiance is GREAT. Well, I thought it was quite nice for writing, and they have lots of tables, armchairs, and comfy couches. Anyway, check it out for yourself.

horrible lighting, never enough tables, shitty coffee, parking can be a pain in the ass to find. you have to buy something to get wireless. a shitty coffee perhaps?

3 stars: it's a coffeehouse. It's got free Internet if you buy something. My vanilla chai latte (don't make fun of me, I like them, they taste like Christmas) did not taste like a vanilla chai latte. Plus there are always movie industry types in there stroking their egos "wow, what a great idea" "we should do that next Saturday" and then talking about the cost of production and what Harvey, Ira, or whomever the hell they kiss ass to, will think of their brilliance. Please guys, keep your ego masturbation to your office, or better yet, let your secretary do it for you. Please? All I want to do is drink my vanilla chai latte that doesn't taste like a vanilla chai latte and surf the web in peace. Maybe I should make the next order to go. 3 stars: It's not too hard to tell that a lot of the psychobabble regulars are employment-challenged. My friend and I like to play the game of "who here has a day job." In the midst of an unemployment stretch, I made a 2:00 pm visit to the 'bab and confirmed my suspicions that a lot of the night time regulars do indeed spend the entire day sitting around on sofas ordering coffee and not much else. Damn I'm jealous. Psychobabble is a bit of a bum hangout, also. They're not too discriminating about who's allowed in, and the usual crowd will tell you confidently that the couches have never been cleaned and most likely retain traces of waste matter and bodily excretions from the eclectic blend of patrons. However, I'm giving it three stars because it's a good place to people watch, particularly when smoking outside at the tables, and the pai mu dan white tea is awesome. 3 stars: it's a well meaning cafe. they provide a username and password to log on to their wireless for a variable number of hours depending on how much you spend. i understand the reasoning behind that, especially in an area known for its population of cafe-dwelling starving writers and artists. HOWEVER, it's a bit annoying getting kicked off the network in the midst of grueling research or having to pack my stuff up from the patio every hour just to buy a new cup of coffee and more wireless time. a single americano is 2.35 (seems to be the going price for americanos in silverlake). the cafe is really plain and the crowd seems pretty work/study saturated. the patio is nice but the street noise from the buses and aggravated honking drivers make it hard to relax. oh yeah, like everyone else says, the baristas begrudgingly provide "decent" customer service. i hate giving indie shops bad ratings but...i honestly have no desire to go back here. it's not good for working on my laptop and it's not good for people watching or relaxing with a book. sorry psychobabble...it's time for you to pick an identity and develop it. right now, you are just a big ol' blah with expensive coffee. Seriously, I don't know what the people in these reviews are bitching about. Psychobabble is no more expensive than any of the other coffeehouses in the area, and I find the staff friendly and accomodating. There are plenty of outlets to plug your laptop into, and the clientele is uniformly friendly. The teas are varied and tasty, the lattes sweet and delicious. Yes, there are lots of people here on laptops. Many of them are working on screenplays. That is because Psychobabble is a coffeehouse in Los Angeles. For some, it seems, this is a difficult concept to grasp. 4 stars: I come here a couple of times a week. If you go, avoid the couches; they are kind of old, as another reviewer mentioned. The raspberry latte is great, and you can't beat any of the teas.
