Flightpath
Type: Coffeeshop / Cafe Hours: M-F 8-Midnight, S-S 8:30-Midnight
Big, spacious coffeeshop with good lighting. Lots of students come here to study. Very livingroom-ish. Recommended.

One of my favorite places in Austin
I found Flightpath by accident - I took a wrong turn at 51st street about 3 months ago and in an attempt to turn around and head back towards Lamar, I turned right on Duval. It was the best mistake I made, because I discovered Flightpath. The atmosphere is amazing, the 2 "sections" of the coffeeshop are large, spacious, and well-lit, and the wifi works great. The decor is reminiscent of the 1950s/1960s, and whether you prefer a comfortable couch or a traditional table and chair setup, both those desires can be easily accommodated here. The downside? It can become very crowded, very fast. You'll often have "vultures" who walk around the place, waiting for a particular spot to open up so they can sit there, and that can become quite annoying if you're trying to work. You'll often see people switching spots every 5 minutes as a "better" one becomes available, and I've actually encouraged a game of musical chairs once because this activity is so consistent. Parking can be a pain as well. The coffee is good (I love their iced lattes with a variety of monin syrups in it), and their quiche hits the spot when I get a craving for it. All it all, a great place that's well hidden in central Austin.

Flightpath closes at 11pm
FYI, the hours listed here are old; Flightpath now closes every night at 11pm. But the place still rocks!

No News!
I've always loved this place: great atmosphere, good people watching, etc. But since I was here last, the USENET has been password locked. Because of my work, this makes the Flightpath no longer an acceptable wi-fi location. Sigh.

Great place. Owner and employees real personable and down-to-earth. Retro-casual environment.

One of the first free wireless coffee shots
Lots of tables; lots of power outlets; lots of students. Good net connection, but can be under a heavy load. Fun spot for people watching.

Good wireless, spacious, felt like a university library
Back room very spacious, lots of interesting seating, plenty of tables, felt roomy and pleasant. It seemed 100% of the people there were studying students (it may have been finals week). Wireless worked fine. Sad that the serving area is separated from the seating areas.

Nice Place
This is nice place, locals come in and out but mainly students in the back. They have a nice little outdoor area.

re-open
Flightpath has re-opened it's back half. So, it's once again a big, spacious coffeeshop with good lighting. The especially good news is that, since Flightpath is a student hangout, it's been less crowded now that summer is here.

flightpath is no longer nice
i used to really enjoy going to flightpath to hang out online, but since they shut down the back half of the shop it has become a crammed, unpleasant experience. not to mention that the inside is always frickin' hot seein' as they rarely turn on the a/c. go somewhere (anywhere) else. possibly trianon or schlotzky's? on an 80-degree or warmer day, you will be miserable at flightpath.

For what it's worth, I'm nearly certain the access here is DSL and not Cable Modem. I always have to set my outgoing mail server to mail.swbell.net . The wireless link does have a habit of going down ever once in a while for a few minutes, but I've spent many an hour here and it is a good place to get work done.

Great place, but will the neighborhood put it out of business?
Flight Path has been one of my favorite sip and surf places for awhile - fast wireless, reasonably priced coffee, and plenty of room. Before Christmas they posted a flyer saying nearby residents were complaining about all the cars in the neighborhood, asking people to park at a nearby church in the evenings, and warning that the alternative would be to reduce capacity to get the city off their backs. Recently they made good on the threat - many tables and chairs have been removed. Hopefully they can tolerate the reduced business.

Friendly place.
Friendly place. Chocolate cheesecake was pretty decent, but try the apple pie.

Afterhours access
If you need a quick e-mail check or something at night and have no service from home, you can just park out in from of the Flightpath and get a pretty fast signal.

Cable Modem Problems at Flightpath
Sometimes the service at Flightpath is spotty. The wireless will just turn off for five minutes without warning -- and then snap right back on. Flightpath's still a really good location, but I find this to be really annoying sometimes.
