This project will establish high-speed, roaming wireless access to the internet within the "mesh" coverage area in Central and East Austin. Also, it may extend established wireless hotspots to the outdoor wireless network. "It's exciting to see Austin truly become a digital economy-one that leads the way in developing innovative partnerships to increase access to technology in ways we never dreamed of possible," said Mayor Will Wynn. "This effort will help champion the divide for those without access to the internet and provide creative opportunities to those who do. The Outdoor Wireless Mesh Project will allow Austinites to stay connected while enjoying our quality of life. It will also be a benefit to our economic development practices." Several access points will be installed throughout two areas in Central Austin, including portions of East Austin, Downtown and Zilker Park. Wireless access will be available beginning in May for Downtown; June for portions of East Austin; and July for Zilker Park. The "Outdoor Wireless Mesh Project" will be the first of its kind in the nation by establishing a wireless field testing environment that will be available for new application development in the areas of education, economic development, City Services and Digital Convergence Initiatives. So here I sit in Starbucks drinking a Pumpkin Spice Latte (with 2 pumps of cimminon (yes, I know I misspelled it)... and using Borders connection... this is gonna hurt T-Mobile which is the provider for Starbuck. Yes, there are plugs to be had... at least in Starbucks.

Review from Overscope: I like Kick Butt Coffee (just north of the intersection of Airport Blvd and Koenig Ln./2222/290, on the east side of Airport just south of Highland Mall near Spec’s.) Business is growing; they played the remake of “Planet of the Apes” and “Batman Begins” while I was there (the volume was low enough that I wasn’t distracted but occasionally I’d look up – “Oooh, monkeys!”) The place has an inherent sense of humor – the rubber throwing stars and nunchaku for sale at the counter, the “25 Facts About Chuck Norris”, the Master Gohring advertisement over the urinal reading “This is not the greatest challenge of your life” all combine to add a pleasant goofy ambiance. It’s no surprise, really, considering Joy (owner Master Gohring’s sister) is a stand-up comedienne and Master Gohring himself teaches Tai Chi and Kung Fu. Speaking of comedy, Kick Butt has a small stage and host a stand-up open-mic once a week. I’m thinking about how to stage improv there, how to approach the management, etc. because I think the place has potential, I like it, it’s close to home, and it’d be nice to have a fourth (fifth?) venue in town doing improv. Selfishly, it’d give my troupe a bit more cred and stage time if we pulled it off. Add two stages and I believe this is what The Hideout was envisioned to be, it’s probably no surprise that Sean Hill (proprietor of The Hideout and one of my improv instructors) is listed as a comedy consultant. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a very good judge of coffees. I can tell Bunn-O-Matic from barista-brewed, I can distinguish French roast from medium roast, and I know ‘espresso’ is not spelled with an ‘x’ or a ‘c’, but that’s about it. That said, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve ordered there. Kick Butt’s website explains their approach to coffee in easy-to-understand martial arts terms. In my coffee shop universe, the coffee is secondary to the environment and in terms of atmosphere, Kick Butt is a winner. A present the place is quiet – there were three or four people there from 9:30pm to close last night (Monday), so I could get a table with an outlet which is getting harder to do at Thunderbird over on Koenig. I like Thunderbird a lot but it’s right in the middle of a residential neighborhood (a good thing) so it gets a lot of local evening traffic. Kick Butt is in a strip mall, isolated from local foot traffic and my guess is that it does more daytime commercial trade.
